Sandpaper Year
It’s past the point of day everyone left
The morning’s moving backwards through my head
And I’m not worth a mile in your car
Would it be unkind to ask you where you are?
Chorus:
There’s so much to fear from a sandpaper year, yeah
it
Sure just wears things down
‘Til no one wants to stick around
And there’s not much to say on a sandpaper day, I’ll
just
Melt into the ground
And then it might not sing so loud.
It’s past the point of knowing what to say
My mind is moving backwards through the day
And I’m not worth a letter in the mail,
A thought or a phone call,
An inhale or exhale
To be alone is what you make it
I want to make it okay,
No one needs to be my blanket
Or help me make it through the day.
Chorus

Flood
Gold-brown upon the sated flood
The rock-vine clusters lift and sway:
Vast wings above the lambent waters brood
Of sullen day.
A waste of waters ruthlessly
Sways and uplifts its weedy mane,
Where brooding day stares down upon the sea
In dull disdain.
Uplift and sway, O golden vine,
Thy clustered fruits to love's full flood,
Lambent and vast and ruthless as is thine
Incertitude.

锦瑟 Jin Se (The Zither)
How sorrowful, alas, are the fifty strings of the zither,
Each reminding me of the years that have gone by!
Like the Taoist Zhuangzi, I have come to confuse my
identity with the butterflies I so frequently dream of,
having surrendered to stupor –– gravity inverting,
illusions
and realities commingling. Like Emperor Wang Di,
I entrust to the cuckoos my deepest melancholies.
Now, a beam of moonlight ascends from the weathered
sea
whose ebbs and flows send crystallized teardrops ashore.
Still blue is the celestial canvas, when the Sun, descending
further yet, melts into a jumble of heat and smolder.
If only I could comprehend the depths of life much
earlier,
but it was too profound for my youthful imagination.
–Li Shang Yin
